Frustrated, let down, disheartened…? We’ve all been there with internet business. When nothing would work and you’ve sent good money after bad and still haven’t got the traffic or the sales you need to grow your business. Guess what…
First Thing: We’ve All Been Lied To
There is a big lie perpetrated on the internet that all you need is a passion, or a cool product or business idea to succeed. Just throw up a site and you’ll automatically drive a million new visitors to your page and do tons of business.
A ‘Build it and they will come’ kind of myth.
If you’ve tried to build a business online before you probably figured out by now that’s not true, and traffic doesn’t just happen. Maybe you got despondent and built a ‘better’ website, or resorted to buying traffic on Adwords, Facebook Ads etc.
Maybe that worked, maybe not, but it’s hard to make a positive return on that PPC investment right?
I believed it for a while, and then I realised something…
Some players out there are making it to the top of the search rankings, and are reaping the benefit of all that free Google traffic. In fact, you can probably find one of your main competitors up there right now if you look.
I realised, they knew something that I didn’t…
The reason your competitors are beating you to the money keywords is because they have a secret that they don’t want you to know. It’s nothing to do with having a better website, or a more awesome product, or posting on social media more often.
Your competitors are investing in guerilla digital services to increase their search rankings to keep you off the front page and them on it.
Some quick statistics
- There are at least 140,000 websites made every day (that was back in 2012). You can’t just expect yours to be noticed right? You statistically have more chance of winning the lottery.
- Google’s first page alone gets 33% of the search traffic. That’s volume of actual clicks.
- The organic results get 90% of the clicks on that page! So not the ads, in other words.
So we know that getting on the first page is great, and we know that it doesn’t just happen by chance, so how do you get there? What’s this secret sauce that your competitors have figured out but won’t tell you?
The secret to unlimited traffic is in SEO
It’s a simple 2-stage process:
“I can tell you what they are. It is content. And it’s links pointing to your site.” – Andrey Lipattsev, a Search Quality Senior Strategist at Google
“Backlinks remain an extremely important Google ranking factor. We found the number of domains linking to a page correlated with rankings more than any other factor.” – Brian Dean, Backlinko
That’s right, the secret to unlimited traffic is: you need to build authority backlinks and post regular, high quality, engaging blog content on your site.
This is exactly what your competitors are doing to outperform you and steal your traffic.
Stop Wasting Time & Money On Crap That Doesn’t Work
You need to get cracking on this right now, because your competitors have a headstart on you.
Stop wasting money on everything else, focus some of that energy and resource on these two key factors right now to build a future-proof source of new business.
Build authoritative, high DA backlinks.
Write super-helpful, engaging content for your customers and start posting to your site once a week, or at least once a fortnight.
Share that content with your social audiences, then reach out to other bloggers in your niche, or in related niches and ask to guest post, or ask for a link to your content. Some will ignore you, but every now and then one will say yes.
Building backlinks? What Kind of Blogs??
All backlinks are not created equal, and you don’t want a thousand of them from just one website. In fact you want a light sprinkling of links from one site and move on to another one. The more referring domains the better.
If you want a shortcut, do some competitor backlink analysis to find out what the key players in your niche are doing for backlinks and ethically model them.
You also want to mix in some high DA (domain authority) sites, the higher the better. Sites like Forbes, Entrepreneur.com etc carry A LOT of weight with Google and a link on one of their sites will really make an impact.
Your blogs should be a mix of search engine friendly and engaging to humans. Optimise one blog around one keyword, write at least 1000 words and don’t do keyword stuffing. That’s repeating the same word over and over and over until the reader loses the will to live.
Over optimisation is a real danger and will actually damage your search rankings so keep your writing natural, use LSI keywords (similar, related keywords), use phrase matched keywords.
Try to solve a problem for your reader – if you do that you’re more likely to get shares and links because they found your article helpful.
5 Tactics For Building Backlinks Right Now
The Skyscraper Method – This is guest posting but with a twist. Go on BuzzSumo and enter the keyword that you want to rank for, or build a link for. The top result of your search will be the most shared piece of content on that subject, so it’s a pretty good indication of what’s popular, on trend, etc. Find 2 or 3 similar articles and using them as a foundation, craft your own super blog.
So if the post is “13 Ways To Improve Energy Efficiecny In Your Home” – You write a blog with 50 ways to improve energy. Get the idea?
Now reach out to the author/s of your original blog and say something like: Hi, I loved your blog, it inspired me to write this blog and wondered if you would share this on your site, or link to my blog from yours.
Giving Free Stuff Away – Do you sell a product or a service that you can afford to give away as a promotion? Or offer a micro-service for free? Physical products are great for this because you can send a free sample of your product to a blogger and ask for a backlink in return.
Bloggers love receiving free stuff, that’s pretty much why they set out to blog in the first place! Some will ask for money but you can just avoid them because there are plenty who will do it for free.
Social Sharing – Promoting your content on social platforms is a great way to get shares and links. Every time you release a new article or piece of content share it across your chosen social platforms. While the shares themselves carry some juice it’s not anywhere near as much as an authority site linking directly to you. However, get enough shares and you are sure to pick a few links from bloggers who love your content.
Broken Link Method – You could call this the Good Samaritan; basically you contact a site owner and tell him/her that their links are broken. Then you suggest your own content URL to replace the link.
Use the Google Chrome plugin, Check My Links to find a site’s broken links so you can reach out.
The Outsource Method – Literally outsourcing your link building efforts to professionals who build links on your behalf. They’ll share your content, or write it themselves and sprinkle it around high authority sites. A good link builder will use a good spread of different referring URLs and diversify their anchors.
I’m a little biased because I do this for clients but it works and it’s undoubtedly the quickest way to build traffic. Make sure you choose a reputable firm for this- a lot of link builders in the past have built shady PBN links which have just been HEAVILY penalised by Google. Don’t fall into this trap.
3 Steps To Blogging Mastery
Solve a Problem – Put yourself in your customer’s shoes and identify a real life challenge that they face in their business or personal life. Make sure it’s relevant to the service or product you sell, then blog about the solution.
People love to consume helpful content, so think about guides, how-tos, checklists etc.
Write For Humans – We’re talking about blogging for SEO here really, but it must be human friendly. Google released an algorithm update that explicitly punished thin content so avoid crappy blogs with no valuable info. If you follow the point above you’ll be well on the way to writing insightful, helpful content.
Write Compelling Headlines! – What sounds better: “Making Cakes With Gluten Free Flour Is Not As Boring As It Sounds” OR “11 Amazing Gluten-Free Cake Recipes To Tantalise Your TasteBuds”.
Hopefully the second one caught your attention more than the first. Using power words like Amazing, Incredible, Mind-Blowing, Weird, Astounding etc enhances the readability of your headline. This will lead to more clicks on your article which in turn will help improve your Google search ranking
Too Busy To Do It Yourself? Outsource It!
The great news is you don’t have to do any of that if you don’t want to. Seriously. You can outsource the whole thing to a firm of professionals who will build out the links and craft quality, engaging content, optimised for search engines but written for humans.
What is an endless source of free business worth to you – Thousands of pounds? Tens of thousands? Hundreds of thousands?
Not taking action on this simple 2 step strategy means you are pretty much guaranteed to be paying for that 10% of traffic, forever, and that’s if you can even get your ads onto the first page. It’s just crazy!
